Vija Docherty

I am a painter, illustrator and printmaker. The whole process of making is important to me. I reverently explore the origins of the materials I work with. One of the ways I do this is by foraging for wild colour and hand processing precious matter to make paints and inks. These colours carry a unique reverence for a memory of a certain place and time. As I prepare my materials, I often bring to mind a particular person that I know and love. The love for the 'particular' unfurls to a wider, universal love and it is this which is the aim of my practise. I believe that my paintings hold a healing power, that is their role and I try my best to work in service to this.
